1. Review the State Requirements

In order to renew your insurance license, you must complete the required continuing education hours for the lines of insurance that you are licensed in. All of the hours must be completed and reported prior to your license renewal date to avoid a lapse in your license.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

Total Hours

24 hours biennially for Producers

12 hours biennially for Adjusters

Producers continuously licensed for at least 25 years or who hold one of the following professional designations will receive 12 hours automatically biennially: AAI, CEBS, ChFC, CFP, CIC, CLU, CPCU, FLMI, FSPA and RHU (Hours may not be applied to the Ethics requirement)

Adjusters continuously licensed for at least 25 years or who hold CLU, CPCU and other approved professional designations with annual education requirements receive an automatic credit of 6 hours biennially (Hours may not be applied to the Ethics requirement)

Compliance Renewal Date

Renewal date is the last day of February in even-numbered years.

You may also need to take specific courses or earn specific credit types to renew your license. These course completions will count toward the total hour requirement.

LINE-SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:

CE Course Category Restrictions - Licensees may take courses in any line of authority.

For All Licenses:

Ethics
3 hrs - Producers and Adjusters must complete 3 hrs of Ethics as part of the total requirement.

For Life & Health Producers:

Annuity Best Interest Training

4 hrs - Resident and non-resident producers licensed on or after 8/1/2021, must complete a one-time, 4-Hour Annuity Best Interest Certification Training course before selling, soliciting, or negotiating annuity business in Delaware. A.D. Banker & Company offers this training online or via live webinar; both satisfy the training requirement. The satisfaction of annuity best interest training requirements of another state that are substantially similar to the requirements of Delaware are reciprocal.

Long-Term Care

3 hrs - Producers with a Health license who are selling Long-Term Care (LTC) policies must complete 3 hours of Long-Term Care (LTC) Certification Training as part of their biennial renewal requirement.

For Property & Casualty Producers:

Flood
2 hrs -
Producers selling personal lines or homeowners insurance must complete a 2-hour course on NFIP Flood Insurance Certification Training each renewal period.

There are also additional rules about how the course hours can be applied.

CARRYOVER HOURS:

A maximum of 5 hours may be carried over to the next renewal period. Excess Ethics or speciality training hours will count as General credit.

COURSE REPETITION:

Courses may not be taken more than once in a reporting period.

If you meet any of criteria below, you may be exempt from the continuing education requirements.

EXEMPTIONS:

  • Nonresidents
  • Limited Lines Producers (credit, title, crop/hail, surety, travel, automobile club or car rental insurance)
  • Limited Lines Producers licensed for life insurance or annuity products used solely to fund a pre-need arranged funeral program
  • Resident adjusters licensed for Fidelity and Surety and/or Marine and Transportation
  • Newly licensed individuals for the biennium in which the license is issued
  • Producers continuously licensed for at least 25 years or who hold CLU, CPCU and other approved professional designations with annual education requirements receive an automatic credit of 12 hours biennially (hours may not be applied to ethics requirement)
  • Adjusters continuously licensed for at least 25 years or holding CLU, CPCU and other approved professional designations with annual education requirements receive an automatic credit of 6 hours biennially (hours may not be applied to ethics requirement)

2. Register for and Complete Courses

Once you have determined the renewal requirements for your license, you can register for courses. Each course has an associated credit type; when registering for courses, select courses with credit types that will help to fulfill the renewal requirements for your license.

You must fulfill the course requirements for each of the courses to have them reported.

  • Classroom and webinar course completions are based off of attendance and participation and do not require a completion exam. You must be present for the full duration of the course and be active and attentive throughout to receive credit.
  • Online and Self Study courses are self-paced. You must review the course material and pass the Certification Exam at the end to receive credit.

MONITOR REQUIREMENTS:

Online and self study exams do not require a monitor

REPORTING METHOD:

Once a course has been completed, the completion must be reported to the state. A.D. Banker will report the course completions to State Based Systems.
