1. Review the State Requirements

In order to renew your insurance license, you must complete the required continuing education hours for the lines of insurance that you are licensed in. All of the hours must be completed and reported prior to your license renewal date to avoid a lapse in your license.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

Total Hours

24 hours biennially

8 hrs biennially (for those who held a continuous active license for 25 years as of 10/1/2008. (Bulletin 13-10)

Compliance Renewal Date

Renewal date is the last day of the licensee's birth month, biennially.  Producers must complete CE credits at least 15 days prior to the expiration date of the license.

You may also need to take specific courses or earn specific credit types to renew your license. These course completions will count toward the total hour requirement.

LINE-SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:

CE Course Category Restrictions - Licensees must take courses in license type held. If multi-licensed, 25% must be completed in each line (minumum of 6 hours in Life/Health and 6 hours in Property/Casualty courses).  Note:  Producers who add a line of authority within 1 year of the license expiration date do not have to complete CE for the newly added line. CE should only be completed for the previous lines.

For All Licenses:

Ethics
3 hrs - Producers must complete 3 hrs of Ethics as part of the total requirement.  No more than 3 hours of Ethics can be completed in a renewal period.

For Life & Health Producers:

Annuity Best Interest

4 hrs - Resident and non-resident producers licensed on or after October 8, 2022, must complete a one-time 4-Hour Annuity Best Interest Certification Training course before selling, soliciting, or negotiating annuities.

Reciprocity: NAIC Annuity Best Interest training completed in any other state reciprocates with the Maryland requirement.

Long-Term Care
8/4 hrs - Producers must complete an initial 8-hour Long-Term Care (LTC) Certification Training prior to selling, soliciting, or negotiating Long-Term Care products/policies. After completing the initial requirement, producers must complete a 4-hour ongoing LTC training, due on the completion date of the 8-hour training, every 24 months thereafter.

Long Term Care - CE Requirement
2 hrs - Licensees wanting to sell LTC insurance must complete 2 hrs of LTC biennially. Completion of either the 8 hour or 4 hour LTC training courses will satisfy this ongoing 2-hour CE requirement.

For Property & Casualty Producers:

Flood
2 hrs – A licensed insurance producer who possesses a license to sell property and casualty insurance and who sells flood insurance, homeowners insurance, or commercial property insurance must obtain at least 2 hours of continuing education that directly relates to flood insurance as part of the required hours of continuing education.

There are also additional rules about how the course hours can be applied.

CARRYOVER HOURS:

Carryover hours are not allowed.

COURSE REPETITION:

Courses may not be taken more than once in a reporting period. If a course is taken during two consecutive renewal periods, there must be at least 6 months between completion dates.

If you meet any of criteria below, you may be exempt from the continuing education requirements.

2. Register for and Complete Courses

Once you have determined the renewal requirements for your license, you can register for courses. Each course has an associated credit type; when registering for courses, select courses with credit types that will help to fulfill the renewal requirements for your license.
